Shape up!

Most of us would love to have a body like a supermodel but in reality, we all know it’s pretty difficult to achieve. Their lithe, buff bodies are achieved by countless hours of working out with expensive personal trainers who are with them every step of the way.

In reality, while health and fitness should be a top priority in our lives many of us don’t have the time or money to spend hours working out. We’re busier than ever, and many adults juggle a multitude of roles, including mother, father, husband, friend, lover, chauffeur, sports coach, busy executive – the list goes on. And the longer we go without adequate exercise, the harder it becomes to get back into it.

The thing is, going for a 10km run or joining the throngs of young things working out at a gym isn’t the only form of exercise. While it works for some, the adage ‘No Pain No Gain’ doesn’t have to be your mantra while working out. We've come across a different type of exercise which uses the philosophy work smarter, not harder when coming up with a range of exercises for all types of people.

Shapemaster Studios Powertone assisted exercise creates a workout with the assistance of a variety of specialised motorised tables and chairs. Participants spend a scheduled amount of time on each machine, working on strengthening, toning, lengthening or stretching their upper or lower bodies. Each machine has its own objective and the user can tailor the workout to suit their own level of experience and capability.

The unique part of powertone is the motorised aspect of the machines. You’d be excused for thinking that having a motor makes it easier, the reality is quite the opposite. Although the motor decreases stress on parts of the body such as the neck, back and joints, it also increases the intensity of the workout. During each exercise, the muscle you are working on is contracted more than 100 times – which is nearly impossible to do during a normal workout – and is the secret behind the technique.

The overall aim is to increase strength, endurance and core stability; rehabilitate, regenerate and aid mobility; promote fat and cellulite loss, improve circulation and increase your overall sense of wellbeing. Although not as labour intensive as cardio exercise, it does workout various muscles that haven’t been stretched in years. One of the greatest aspects is the awareness of your body that you will gain and according to 42-year-old Melinka Thomas from Brighton le Sands, the weight loss has been her favourite outcome. “I have been attending using Shapemaster powertone equipment three times a week for the past three months. During this time I have also been watching my diet and have lost 10kg. My dress size has gone from a 16-18 to a 12-14.”

Even if you don't want a butt like Jess, but would still like to get in shape and love your body again, then Shapemaster could be the ideal first step.

Sessions cost between $15-$30 and last between 30-60 minutes.
